The Kilkenny City Christmas Park and Ride scheme commenced operation on Saturday 11th December and operates from two termini at the Old Kilkenny Mart site on the Castlecomer Road and at the Watershed sports complex adjacent to Kilkenny Ring Road. The service operates at approximately half hour frequency from each site. Travel time from each terminus to the city centre is approximately 10 minutes at peak times.
Kilkenny Borough Council propose to extend the scheme as and from Wednesday 15th December. From that date the scheme will run as a free bus service between the Old Mart and the Watershed with intermediate stopping points at Bohernatounish Road, Market Yard and MacDonagh Station. The hours of operation shall be from 8:30am - 6:30pm daily. The scheme should be particularly attractive for employees in the city centre area who will be able to avail of free parking and bus service.
The net benefit is to increase the availability of city centre car parking for shoppers as well as a reduction in congestion at peak times. While the service is free to all users, both pedestrian and motorist, an incentive will be provided to motorists who park at the terminus and use the service. In co-operation with Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce a voucher scheme will be in operation which will allow all drivers who park their vehicles at either at the Mart or the Watershed will participate in a daily draw (except Sundays) for a shopping voucher to the value of €20 which is being presented by Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce. Such a voucher can be cashed at over 50 outlets in the City.
